Sneaker covers: A fresh look for your shoes that lasts longer

Think of it like swapping smartphone covers to personalise your phone— why not do the same with sneakers? These covers come in a variety of colours, are stylish, outfit-ready, and eco-friendly, made from recycled materials. The idea was born in 2022 when three young entrepreneurs launched Unflock. Today, the team includes Gabriele Centonze (CEO), Gabriele D’Urbano (CFO), Davide Donadeo (CPO), Chiara Tartaro (Social Media Manager), and Osho Aguilar (Fashion Designer). 

 

Even the name ‘Unflock’ reflects their vision: blending ‘unlock’ with ‘flock’, the goal is to break free from the crowd and unlock your own unique style.  So, what sparked the idea? “It all stems from fast fashion,” explain the founders at MICAM, where they showcased their innovation in the startup area created in collaboration with ITA and Maeci. “Fast fashion is a massive issue in the industry.

While it’s tough to pinpoint exactly how many pairs of sneakers are worn out every year, we know the environmental toll they take, especially through CO2 emissions. On average, each pair of sneakers produces about 136 kg of CO2, and one of the biggest pollution contributors is the disposal of soles.”

Inspired by smartphone covers, they designed interchangeable soles that snap on without glue or adhesives, using pressure just like a phone case. What are the perks? “First and foremost, sustainability. These covers are made from biodegradable materials,” they explain. “One version is even made from recycled sneaker soles, cutting down on the environmental impact that comes with disposal. Plus, they protect the shoe’s original sole, reducing wear and tear, and allow you to customise your sneakers with endless colour options—a solution to the conformity that’s so common among younger generations.” And how did they tackle the technical challenges? “Nearly two years into the project,” they say, “we’ve finally overcome the issues with sole twisting while walking.”
