Innomake: smart shoes enabling the blind to walk safely and independently

People with visual impairment are well aware that the city and its streets can be a minefield of dangers. Potholes, distracted drivers and cyclists, obstacles of all kinds, uneven pavement, poles and lampposts – what may be a normal (and even relaxing) stroll for someone with normal vision can become a true nightmare for those who are blind or visually impaired.

But what’s the real purpose of technology if not to simplify and improve people’s lives? That’s exactly what the Austrian start-up Tec-Innovation in Vienna must have thought when collaborating with the University of Graz to create footwear that helps the blind and elderly move around the streets with ease and autonomy, while avoiding risks and dangers. Thanks to the InnoMake technology incorporating ultrasonic sensors between sole and upper, visually impaired individuals are alerted to any obstacles along their path. Moreover, this technology could soon be enhanced with a built-in camera, helping users identify the type of obstacle, whether it requires stepping over (such as a small wall, step or rock), circumventing (such as a pothole) or entirely avoiding (such as a lamppost).

Just like a radar signal (and borrowing from the echolocation abilities of bats), the shoe emits ultrasonic pulses, receiving echoes from objects ahead in response. It detects and signals their presence through vibrations within the shoe and, via a mobile app, also provides auditory and visual signals.

There is no need to worry about the sensors positioned at the front of the shoes getting damaged from any bumps they might endure during walking. They are safely contained in two sturdy protective boxes, resistant to dust and water. Plus, with proper charging, the battery can last for up to a week of use. You can also fully recharge InnoMake in just three hours with the included Micro-USB cable.

While the InnoMake team works diligently to deliver an even better performing and safer shoe, one model is already available on the market for € 3,200 per pair.
